Description

This 4-hour in-service is the NETWORK180 approved emergency intervention-restrictive technique training for contracted residential provider staff in the mental health system.  This presentation involves emergency physical intervention techniques, designed for the personal safety of both individuals and staff.   The emergency physical interventions involve 2 sets of techniques; defensive and advanced. The most numerous techniques are defensive which include blocks (punch, kick blocks…), and releases (grip-bite releases…).  The advanced techniques involve the “wrap around”(basket wrap), come-along and the takedown(setting the ‘wrapped’ individual on the floor facing forward in the sitting position). Staff may NOT place the individual face down lying in the prone position on the floor outside of an inpatient psychiatric unit within the State of Michigan.

This training includes principles and successful do’s and don’ts for responding to a potentially dangerous situation. Physical Intervention is always a last resort to protect individuals from imminent risk of serious physical harm. Network180 requires the use of positive behavioral supports including encouraging a culture of companionship in the community provider system.  Emergency physical intervention is about safety and is not used as treatment.

Individuals attending must be able to perform the emergency physical restrictive techniques as taught to receive certification.  They must also pass a written exam.  Dress appropriate for physical movement.  Staff that are required to complete a emergency physical intervention refresher course may repeat this class on an on-going basis as needed.

Note:  Support providers who attend this training are encouraged but not required to complete the Working with People: Positive Behavior Supports training before they attend this training.
